"A Nickle in One Pocket, A Nail in the Other"
Once upon a time, it was all he had. A young soldier, returned from the Vietnam war with two Bronze Medals, a dream and a vision to be a radio announcer/personality. He enrolled in four different schools of communications in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area, only to be dismissed and denied, primarily due to a speech impediment. In a private conversation, he overheard one instructor say to another instructor "I really hated to kick him out, he tries so hard and he has the smoothest voice I have ever heard, it is as smooth as velvet" . The other instructor retorted to the instructor "It may be smooth as velvet, but you can't understand what he is saying. Plus it will take 30 years to clean up his voice before anyone can understand it." Inspired by what he heard the first instructor said, his voice was as smooth as velvet. Even though he did not know what a velvet voice sounded like, he knew velvet was something that felt very good. Now, he was inspired more than ever to continue to pursue his dreams.
Even though he had gotten kicked out of four different radio communications schools, that did Not damper his desire or his spirit to be a radio announcer/personality. It made him decide to build his own Radio Studio, and become his own Teacher where no one would ever dismiss, deny or kick him out of any school again in his life.
Remembering what the studios looked like at the schools he was dismissed and kicked out of, he drew plans and blueprints for his future Studio. Once he completed the studio he practiced everyday for 3 to 4 hours a day. One day doing one of his practice sessions, his DJ show was heard throughout his apartment. An apartment he was sharing with his brother from another mother, had his barber over visiting. The barber wanted to know who was messing up that good music. His brother told the barber that's my brother trying to be a Disc Jockey. The barber spoke to the wanna-be DJ and told him "I know a wino who sounds better than you." The barber was trying to teea of the young the wanna-be DJ, but he surprised the barber by saying: "Take Me To The Wino."
The wino turned out to be a DJ the young man used to listen to every morning, before he left for work when he was 18 years old. He had not heard him on the air since he returned to Los Angeles. He often wondered what happened to that DJ. Now he was about to find out. The DJ he was about to meet was the infamous, the one and only Alex Martin, who worked on some of the most popular radio stations in the Los Angeles area i.e KGFJ, 1965-1968; XPRS, 1971 and others. After spending just a few minutes with this 6 feet 4 inches tall, darker than the Ace of Spade giant of a man, the young wanna-be DJ quickly realized this man was not just another ordinary wino. He realized that he was standing in the present of greatness!! This young wanna- be DJ knew he had to get to know this man. Being a salesman since the age of 8 he knew that people love the sound of their name and they love to hear people call their name more than any other name in the world.
So this young wanna-be DJ started the conversion by saying Mr Martin. After about two hours of conversation with this wonderful man, the young, wanna-be DJ knew this man was a Knowledgeable, Empowering, People loving and Extraordinary individual. Mr. Martin loved talking about his life. The music he had played, the artists he had met and gotten to know, the places he had been. The radio stations he had worked at across the country from Memphis, Tennessee, to Los Angeles, California, to New York City and back again.
The wanna-be DJ, wanting to keep the conversation going, said; "Mr Martin someday I am going to do the same things that you have done and maybe more!" Mr Martin said to the young man "Call me Al or Alex. Number one, set your goals very high. Don't do like I did, I just wanted to be on the radio to catch girls and party and meet famous people." The young wanna-be DJ asked Mr Martin what did he not achieve, that he wanted to do? He told the wanna-be DJ "I really wanted to be a Program Director where all the Power is" He asked the wanna-be DJ if he had any goals. The young man said "Yes, I Want To Own a Radio Station!!" Mr Martin said "I like you. You got Big dreams, whatever I can do to assist you just let me know."
At that very Moment the young, wanna-be DJ said to himself "It's now or never" He said "Mr Alex Martin you are my favorite DJ. I have heard many DJs but none of them are as creative, talented, entertaining and can work a board as tight as you can. I want to be as good as you. The only way I can be as good as you, is to have you train me as your student. I am just a city bus driver. I know I cannot afford to hire you as my private teacher because you are the best there is. I am hoping we can work something out." Mr Martin said "Stop, How Do You Know You Can't Afford Me? You haven't asked me how much I will charge you." The young, wanna-be DJ said "Sir you are right I didn't ask. How much will you charge me to be my private instructor? Mr Martin said" It will cost you a BOTTLE Of BOOM FARM APPLE WINE The BIG Bottle." The wanna be DJ said "Sir with all due respect, I don't have time to waste playing games, I am serious" The young man started walking away disappointed. Mr Martin said "Hey, wait a minute where are you going, I thought you wanted me to teach you radio?" It turned out that Mr Martin was very serious about training this young man for the "BIG, bottle of Boom Farm Apple Wine."
With Alex Martin's hands-on teaching approach and the wanna-be DJ's burning desire and sheer determination, awarded him a "Million dollar education for a Bottle of Boom Farm Apple Wine," meeting Mr Martin's desire and addiction. Mr Martin was very serious about being an instructor. His hands-on approach was no walk in the park. In addition to his hands-on approach, Mr Martin assigned therapy for the wanna-be Dj, which required a 15 minute per day exercise, repeating over and over again, "he trusted three thousand thistles through the thick of his thumb," with his teeth clenched. This resulted in a remarkable cure for his speech challenges. In an evaluative process, Mr. Martin often chastised him with these words, "You still sound like a bitch to me." Those words built a fire in that young man's belly. A fire that drove him to do the exercises Mr Martin told him to do 15 minutes per day, the young man began doing them 4 to 5 times 15 minutes per day.
Then one glorious day, after about a year of Mr Martin's teachings, he heard these words from his mentor, "You Are Now a Radio Announcer." The young Disc Jockey felt like he was graduating from all four of the Communication schools that he had been kicked out of years earlier. The young Disc Jockey was on "Cloud Nine" with excitement. He asked Mr. Martin when can I start to work? I am ready to go. Mr Martin told the young man that he had taught him everything that he knew about Radio. He told the Young Disc Jockey that he has to go back to a school like the ones that dismissed, denied and kicked him out because of a speech impediment to get his First Class FCC License and a Broadcast Certification from an accredited school . The young Disc Jockey chose the best and oldest school in Hollywood Don Martin School of Communication. It was a Four year school. Two years to get your First Phone (First Class FCC License) and two years to get your Broadcasting Certification. Because of the Schooling and Radio teaching from Mr. Alex Martin, this young Disc Jockey graduated from Don Martin School of Communication in Six months Not four years, with his First Class FCC License and a Broadcast Certification from an accredited school, Don Martin School of Communication. This young soldier's name is LaMet Wilson.
Two months after graduating from Don Martin School of Communication. LaMet landed a Midnight to 6am, five days a week job in San Bernardino, California at Radio station KTOT as "LTL" LaMet The Lover. After getting off his show at 6am, he drove back to Los Angeles to his studio and recorded a Three Hour "LTL" LaMet The Lover for San Diego, California Community Radio, to be played back for the next day. He package the 10 inch reel to reel tape, addressed it to the radio in San Diego, California. At 2pm that same day he started his other eight hours shift. His job, driving a city bus, the RTD in Los Angeles, California. He drove until 10pm. After his shift was over the drove back to San Bernardino, California to do his Midnight to 6am "LTL" show all over again.
Because of his love for radio, his drive and hard work ethics he replaced the current Program Director who had 20 years of experience. Being in that position gave this hot young Program Director a lot of latitude. He was actually running the station. He controlled everything from picking the music, interviewing the artists, the sales crew and hiring and firing the Disc Jockeys.
However he never abused his power. He knew he had it but never used it against anyone. He was in a position to hire former students from the school he graduated from like Tayyab Shakoor, Riley Jackson who now owns his own Radio station. He also gave other wanna-be inexperienced DJs a chance to work at the station.
One Friday morning after he recorded his 3 hour show for San Diego, California, he woke up from his short nap in a daze. The first thing he did was call the radio station. His boss answered the phone. LaMet begin apologizing to his boss for not showing up last night and not doing his show. His boss said to him "What are you talking about man? You came in at mid-night and did a great show. You just left here a few hours ago." LaMet knew he had some els
After about a year of that schedule his Doctor told him he had about 6 months to LIVE. He could No longer keep up that schedule, so something had to go. He left KTOT Radio in San Bernardino, California. About a month later the owner of the station was murdered in Los Angeles, Calif. LaMet left Radio in the mid 70s. Started a Pantyhose business Peacock Hosiery very successful but not fulfilling. He started Alymet Express Tour Bus Service again successful but not fulfilling. He started The Pep Group a 24 hour unlimit $59.00 flat per month Cell phone service. Even AT&T could NOT compete with him. Unheard of in the in Cell Phone Industry, again successful not fulfilling.
In January 2009 a friend told LaMet that he had an Internet Radio station. He asked LaMet if he wanted to have a show on his station. LaMet was excited that his friend had a Radio station. Went to visit his station LaMet was disappointed because it was NOT live Radio. You went to his studio and recorded the show and it got played back at some other time. LaMet did that back in 1973-1974 over regular Radio. Hid Not want a repeat of that. But it got him thinking, what if I could do Live Radio on the internet, that would be great, because no one else is doing it.
After being out of Radio for over 30 plus years LaMet got the itch to get back into Radio again, and change internet Radio into "Doing Live Radio On The Internet." He had no idea how he was going to do it. All he knew was with God's help he was going to do it. He set up his Radio studio and joined LIVE 365 in 2010. LIVE 365 kept telling him it was impossible to do Live Radio on the Internet. His question to them was, why? They kept telling him because no one had ever done it.
He called them every day. They got tired of him asking that same question. So they would see his number and not answer the phone. That didn't stop him from calling. He called every day for about 90 days straight. One day someone answered the phone. LaMet didn't recognize his voice. When the new guy asked who was calling, LaMet gave him his name. The new guy said, oh you are that guy who wants to do live Radio on the internet, Right? LaMet said yes, that's me. The new guy said why are you so dead set on doing Live Radio on the internet? LaMet said "God would not have given me the idea or the vision if it was impossible to do"
The new guy said there was a guy about two years ago that had that same idea. He created a program and sent it to us. We tried (talking about LIVE 365) for about two years to make it work. We tried everything we knew and we were Not able to make it work and we are the one who started internet Radio in 1999. So, that's why we say it is impossible to do Live Radio on the internet. LaMet asked the new guy what did you do with the program? The new guy said we threw it in the trash can. LaMet said, so it is gone for good. The new guy said, "Maybe or maybe Not, hold on, I will check the trash can." He came back to the phone and said "we still have it." LaMet asked the new guy how much do you want for it, he told LaMet there is nothing we can do with it, if you want it you can have it for Free!! LaMet almost jumped out of his skin, he thanked the new guy for the software and for listening to him.
LaMet received the software in the mail and started working on how to do Live Radio on the internet. He worked on it day and night, from May 2010 to December 2010. LaMet put in 9 to 12 hours a day trying to make this piece of software work. One morning in December 2010 around 2am God woke LaMet up with a thought and idea of what to do to make what he was trying to do work. LaMet got up and went to his studio and applied the thoughts and ideas of what was in his mind at the time. Around 3am something he called a friend who knew him when he was getting kicked out of Radio schools. He asked her to turn on her computer and type in www.kepxradio.com she did that. He asked her to listen to her computer, hang up her phone and in about 5 minutes he was going to call her back and ask her what she heard on the computer.
She said ok. LaMet went live on the internet from his radio studio. LaMet called her back and asked her what she heard. She said I heard you say something about Marvin Gay from Detroit way... Then she said it's not radio quality, far from it. LaMet thanked her and told her to go back to sleep. LaMet realized with God's help he had done what they said COULD NOT BE DONE.
The rest is history. LaMet Wilson born in a tiny country town in Texas population less than 1000 with a speech impediment.

www.KEPXRadio.com was the First Internet Radio Station to do LIVE Broadcasting on LIVE365 in the USA. Just because Live365 told him "It was Impossible to do Live Radio on the Internet" But with God's Help he made it happen and he did it on LIVE365 in January 2011!
